Maps of the Mill Pond and Mill River
for Benthic Survey, Gloucester

Topo Map of the Region:

Water flows from the Babson Reservoir into the Mill River which was impounded in the 17th century to provide the first water power for milling corn. The City of Gloucester is currently engaged in a project to install a new tidegate structure on the Mill River in order to allow greater tidal ebb and flow to the approximately 33-acre salt marsh above Washington Street. Funding has been secured from the NOAA Restoration Center to complete the design and construction.

Aerial Photo of the Region:

Now that the tidegate is open at Washington Street, the tides have returned resulting in mudflats at low tide. The benthic survey area is indicated by cross-hatch and the O’Maley Middle School is at right.
