FEBRUARY

February 24, Tuesday
Marine Invasive Species in Massachusetts: What They Are, How They Get Here, and What We are Doing to Keep Them Out.

7:00 PM - 8:30 PM
Program Room, Beverly Public Library (Click here for directions)
Fee: Free. Pre-registration not required.

Threats from marine invasive species are receiving increased attention from scientists and environmental managers in the United States and across the globe. These nonindigenous, or non-native species are introduced to new waters by a variety of possible transport mechanisms, including ballast water from commercial ships, the aquaculture and seafood industry, the pet trade, and many other pathways. Because they have no natural predators in their new environments, many of these species can quickly spread out of control.

While the highest profile invasions in the US have occurred in the Great Lakes region (zebra mussel) and the west coast (Chinese mitten crab), New England has also seen the impacts of numerous marine invaders. The European green crab has dramatically altered coastal habitats in Massachusetts, and the green algae Codium fragile is washing up in such large quantities on Cape Cod beaches that town landfills will no longer accept the decomposing material.

Jay Baker from Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management will present an overview of the marine invasive species issue in Massachusetts including species of concern, priority transport mechanisms, current impacts, and current management efforts. The role of local groups in monitoring for these species will be discussed, along with a regional online mapping system being developed to track the introduction and spread of these species. The presentation will conclude with a discussion of steps that can be taken at the local level to minimize the introduction and spread of invasive species.

Salem Sound Coastwatch has a Coastal Habitat Marine Invasive Monitoring Program enlisting trained volunteers to monitor the presence of marine invasive species on docks, pilings, rocky shoreline, saltmarsh creeks, and tidepools.

Call SSCW at 978-741-7900 for more information or email info@salemsound.org.
