Salem Sound Coastwatch Receives Environmental “Visionary Award”

SSCW extends our thanks to the following groups for their part in making this award possible.

1. The many talented and dedicated volunteers that participate in our various environmental monitoring programs;
2. The growing list of citizens who support our efforts by joining our organization as members;
3. Our many partner organizations and agencies, including local, state, and regional resource managers, other nonprofit organizations, and local businesses.

This award is a tribute to their dedication and support. Thank you!

Salem Sound Coastwatch Is Honored for Leadership

Each year, the Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment gives Visionary Awards
to organizations and individuals that show exceptional dedication to preserving and maintaining the quality of the Gulf of Maine. These awards recognize innovation, creativity, and commitment to protecting the marine environment. This particular award recognizes SSCW as "a leader in protecting coastal habitats, commercial and recreational marine resources, and water quality for more than
ten years".

The Gulf of Maine Council on the Marine Environment is a U.S.- Canadian partnership of government and non-government organizations working to maintain and enhance environmental quality in the Gulf of Maine (of which Salem Sound is a part) to allow for sustainable resource use by existing and future generations.

“This award echoes the vision our organization has for Salem Sound; we envision a far-reaching cooperative stewardship among the communities that share the Sound's resources and beauty,” says Rob Gough, Executive Director.

“The award underscores the efforts of many people, over many years, especially our team of volunteer “citizen scientists. In fact,” says Gough, “the Gulf of Maine Visionary Award was given to the Salem Partnership, by whom Salem Sound Coastwatch was founded fourteen years ago.”

Massachusett Office of Coastal Zone Management commends Salem Sound Coastwatch for receiving this award at a grant announcement meeting in Salem this past February. Salem Sound Coastwatch was also awarded a grant of $19,795 by the Massachusetts Coastal Nonpoint Source Pollution grant program for a Salem Sound Marine Sanitation Needs Assessment. The assessment will begin in the 2005 summer boating season.
